There is a very healthy junior section in the Club, under the direction of our coach Geoff Vaughan and our Junior Representative, Sara Hall. Geoff provides the enthusiasm and professionalism in order to strengthen and develop our future players.
Geoff, who has been coaching for over 10 years, coaches Juniors in groups and individually. Junior coaching is structured around the LTA’s Mini Tennis system. There are four distinct stages designed to cover physical ability, technical skills, sportsmanship and on & off court commitment:
•Mini Red - Played on small courts with a bigger slow ball. (Approx 5 – 7 year olds)
•Mini Orange - ¾ size court with a slightly quicker ball. (Approx 8 – 9 year olds)
•Mini Green- Full tennis court with a quicker ball. (Approx 10 - 12 year olds)
•Raw - The full adult game, played by juniors (13 + years)
Juniors who meet the playing criteria and demonstrate the required commitment can move into the Performance Squads, play competitive tennis and represent the club in matches against other clubs.
Geoff encourages juniors to practice with each other, under their parents’ supervision, outside coaching hours. Juniors may use the courts any weekday before 6.30pm except when there are matches or other club events and the courts are specially set aside for Junior Practice on Friday afternoons (4.00pm to 5.00pm Ages 5-9; 5.00pm to 6.00pm Age 10+). There is no club supervision or coaching at this time and parents must remain present. However, it gives an excellent opportunity for juniors to practice the skills they have learned during coaching.
If you are a junior, or a parent of a junior, wishing to know more about coaching sessions then please see the notice board for details or text Geoff Vaughan on 07812 142463 or email isgeoff@hotmail.com
